Aunt Jean 2000 Results, Pictures and Other Silly Stuff

It's another racing year and Aunt Jean had a rocky start to say the least.  Our first event was the Annapolis NOOD which was a three day affair that saw the first two days sailed in light and variable air with a northerly fighting a southerly.  On Fridays race we somehow managed a first, and when I say somehow I really mean somehow because I don't remember any of the details.  I must hate light air so much I get a mental block or brain fried... Anyway... second went Jake, third to Quicksilver and fourth to Grayling.  On Saturday it was another typical Annapolis day (read no air) we were practicing our drifting around wthout dying from bordom manuevers when lo and behold the race committee decided to have a race.  This was not good for Aunt Jean and I quickly ensured our destruction by being on the line too early and having to slow the boat down to zero just before the gun went off.  Needless to say in 5 knots of breeze we got rolled by every boat in the fleet.  After that the Wiley Annapolis Locals took great joy in camping on us.  It was so bad that I even tried going the wrong way figuring they wouldn't tack on us leaving the favored tack...wrong.  The only thing that kept us from getting last was the penchant for the Annapolis area wind to crap out ahead leaving the last place boat a chance to sail around the haples creatures who got caught in the hole.  So we wound up eigth, thanking god for finishing that well.  My friends on Dreamer won the day with Grayling in second, J Bird in third and Medicine Man in fourth.  Sunday was going to be interesting because there were now seven boats within six points of each other.

NOOD 2000 Aboard Aunt Jean....I'd rather be fishing

Sunday looked like our kind of day.  The breeze was 15 to 20 out of the South West, we got a good start and were dialing in when Rippp....Our medium one's leach blew apart.  Our ever resourceful crew were already down below getting another jib when I decided the regatta wasn't worth destroying what was left of a brand new jib.  I called for them to drop the jib immediately and worry about getting another up afterwards.  So going bald headed for five minutes we saved the sail (already repaired as I wright this) but lost the race.  By lost I mean Last place...ouch.  In the second race of the day we got a good start and led the whole way.  Our great consistancy :) 1,8,12,1 gave us 22 points which was one point behind third place Maggie and eight points Behind Jake and Grayling, with Jake winning the tie.

The next and last J35 race of the spring Annapolis races was a real heart breaker.  It was a very light and shifty northerly race.  We got agood start hit a few shifts correctly and came out at the top mark in the lead.  We led the whole way around until the last two hundred yards when a big left shift allowed Jake to get his bow out in front and dig into the left side which was enough to put him ahead on an easy port cross to the finish.  We were a bit concerned about our lack of speed in light air and had the boat pulled before the North Americans and found the bottom had a new coat of paint but hadn't been wet sanded....can you say STUPID!!
